Just
under a third of
Howard Stern's once-regular listeners have bought, or plan to buy,
access to
Sirius Satellite Radio, according to a survey of people who listened to
Mr. Stern on terrestrial radio. Another 37 percent now listen to the
replacement morning shows on Mr. Stern's old stations. And a third have
migrated to other stations, according to Jacobs Media, a radio consultancy. The survey was conducted by e-mail in 20 different markets. Because the 3,300 respondents selected themselves by clicking on an e-mail link, the survey is not statistically rigorous, but it provides a rough early look at how some stations fared after Mr. Stern's January departure.
Not all of Mr. Stern's former affiliates were equally good at retaining his listeners: of those surveyed, one kept 55 percent of his former listeners after January, and another only 25 percent.
Mr. Stern discussed the survey on the air two weeks ago, saying it showed that he had been able to attract more listeners to satellite than had been predicted. ALEX MINDLIN
